 Windsor Green Pantry Box

Presented here, a tiny little round pantry box that is perfect for the top of the stack. It measures a mere 2-1/4 inches in diameter and is 1 inch high.  These tiny containers, both round and oval are known as pillboxes, although they were used for many items besides medicine.  According to Nina Fletcher Little in Neat and Tidy, "Black sand for blotting ink, small shells bored for wampum beads (so labeled), sealing wax wafers, and short nails used long ago in carpentry are only a few of the treasures that have been found in little boxes long forgotten in old desk drawers."

Made of thinly shaved maple with pine top and bottom, this little box is fastened with wooden pegs and hand hammered tacks which would indicate it dates most likely to the early 1800's.  It has a nice dry surface and the paint shows wear consistent with age and usage.  The color is a Windsor Green that has blackened with age.  The condition is excellent with no apologies.
