 Four Finger Shaker Box

Shaker Oval Boxes, as with many other products adapted by the Shakers, were better made and more carefully finished than those produced elsewhere.  The wood was properly seasoned and the covers fit perfectly.  These wooden boxes were manufactured for a longer period than any other product made in the Shaker communities, both for their own use and for sale to the "world".

This classic little oval box from the Mt. Lebanon Community is made of maple.  It has three "fingers" or "lappers" in the joinery on the box and one on the lid. These fingers are fastened with copper tacks.  It is in first paint . . . a nice, dry, and unusual blue/grey color that has oxidized to a charcoal grey. The condition of the box is excellent and gives a whole new meaning to the word "pristine".  ( 8-1/2" long x 5-1/2" wide x 3-1/4" high)
