Rockingham Toby Bottle

Referred to as Coachman or Toby  bottles, these tall pieces were, like so much American Rockingham, modeled on an English prototype, though the English piece were usually more detailed than the American pieces.  They were intended to hold a fifth or quart of whiskey and sealed with a cork.  This particular bottle is considered to be quite rare.  It is pictured on page 322, plate 421 in Barrett's book on Bennington Pottery and Porcelain.  Here we have our coachman holding a bottle.  He has tassels on his cloak and has a mustache. Most of the coachmen did not have the mustache. 10-3/4" high, marked with the impressed 1849 mark, 1849-1858.
