Pair Fanback Windsor Chairs

These wonderful Fanback Windsor Chairs are somewhat of a masterpiece of design.   Plus, we have a pair! The crest rail is executed with one of the best sorts of uncarved ears . . . large, flat, curving, and rising higher than center of the crest rail. The entire movement of the back is upward and outward. One could not ask for better-defined turnings on a Windsor, or better spacing between them. The collar and ring turnings of the attenuated back posts are perfect miniaturized reflections of the bold leg turnings. The bulbous side stretchers are designed to echo the visual weight of the ears and of both baluster turnings of the legs. The seat is unusually well saddled with pinched-in waist and crisp edges. Seat height is 17" at the front edge.  The chairs are in 19th century black paint over original green.  The surface is dry with a good patina.

These are beautiful, highly developed, highly stylized chairs and a wonderful expression of Windsor design, probably Connecticut,  circa 1780.  They are dynamic and exciting pieces of American Windsor furniture. It is what Windsor furniture is all about.
