 Calligraphy

Art using calligraphic techniques was an outgrowth of new interest in elegant penmanship during the 18th and 19th centuries.  These drawings were done with quills or steel pens and featured the repeated cursive flourishes used in elegant handwriting.  Overall design, execution, and general appeal are the major factors that we consider when evaluating this genre` of Folk Art.  As in any art form, original composition is valued more highly than calligraphic drawings copied from prototypes in drawing books.
The calligraphic drawing we are pleased to present here is excellent in every way.  It is an original composition that features a trailing vine laden with grapes twining itself around a wooden frame within which sit three rather wonderful birds.  Our folk artist, James Nutton, who has signed the piece on the back goes on to tell us that it was "EXECUTED WITH A PEN". . . no easy feat!  The drawing is of an impressive size . . . 29-1/2"wide x 23" high (including the linen mat).  It is in outstanding condition.  The toning that shows in the photo above is simply a trick the camera is playing.  The overall coloration is quite even.  At first when one looks at this drawing it almost appears to be a needlework piece, it is so finely done.  Closer inspection reveals the work of a very talented Calligraphic Folk Artist.
American, circa mid 19th century.
