Scrimshaw Cane with Whalebone Eagle

Extremely well carved Scrimshaw Cane with full bodied Whalebone Eagle mounted atop an exotic wood cane with ivory and ebony rings.  Canes and Walking Sticks made of bone and ivory were one of the most popular items the scrimshander made for his own use.   They were popular accessories carried by a fashionably dressed man.  They were also made as presentation pieces given to the Captain.  It was on the handle that the scrimshander lavished his most attention and that is where this piece excels.  The detailed feather carving on the eagle is exceptional.  These "going ashore" canes, while serving as a fashion statement also served as a means pof protection.

This exceptional piece can also be noted for its artful "engineering" design.  It appears there may have been some self protection thoughts behind the super strong, while graceful, mount design. The cane is in excellent condition, from the carved bone eagle down through the shaft and to the whalebone tip. This, a very special walking stick dating to the last half of the 19th Century.  The cane is 37-1/2" long.
