Mid 19th C. Cased Ship Model

Have you been looking for a scratch built sailing model created in the 1800 s era with the makers naivet` of modeling, but with his thorough knowledge and great love of the sea on which he spent his life? Well then this one should be of interest. This case, made of walnut primaries with a beautiful old finish is all hand worked, hand carved, and built to stand the worst of the Nor or Sou'easters.

The hand cut screws cut two each into the front posts of the case (great strength solution, but not a major design feature) along with some smaller square nails give a dating of mid 1800's. The top fascia board of the case is decorated with thumbnail grooving and a recess carved anchor with 3 anchor chain links having original residual gold paint.

Finish History: Originally warmly varnished, it appears the flat surfaces around the glass and on the top were painted blue. The flat surface of the carved ornamental top-piece shows blue on the worn edges and corners also. This shows up only on close observation since there appears to be an old coat of black paint to hide the blue. The front glass has more waves than the Maine coast . . . obviously old and original.

The ocean is represented by waves carved deeply in pine. The sea, running from the port beam, is painted a dark gray with whitecaps all nicely muted by the long expanse of time since the model s construction.  Size is 23" long x 12" wide x 19"high.  All in all, to the lover of such aged items, this is a very rare find.
