Sarah Petts, England, 1841

This delightful little English sampler was worked by Sarah Petts at age 10 in 1841. Using colorful crewel wool which has retained its vibrant color, our little needleworker created a charming scene whose main focus is a salmon colored house. On the roof of the house sits an enormous bird that in real life would probably crash through the roof should he ever deign to perch there! Such is the world of samplers, where reality is perceived through the eyes of a 10 year old.

The house is flanked by two urns of flowers and two dogs and the rest of the sampler is filled with spot motifs of birds and crowns and apple trees. Sarah also includes a pious verse from John 50.

Search the scripture for in them ye think ye have eternal life
and they are they which testify of me

Worked in wool on linen, except for the windows on the house which are worked in silk, perhaps to simulate glass, the sampler is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into what appears to be its original frame.
Sampler size (sight) is 11-3/4" x 12-3/4".
