Pocket Watch Sampler
During the first part of the 19th Century, tiny needlework samplers were fashioned to fit inside the cover of a gentleman's pocket watch. Often times instead of being used for the original intent, they were framed so they could be enjoyed by all. In this particular case the little sampler appears to have been used as it was originally intended . . . inside the case of a pocket watch. The border is worked in green and ivory silk on fine linen and in the center the word Gratitude is written in ink, most likely a token given in thanks for some kindness rendered. These are considered to be quite rare in the world of samplers and most likely English.
The sampler size is 1-1/3" in diameter and the oval frame is 4" x 3".
