Salt Glaze Stoneware Jar w/ Cobalt Bird
Presented here, a fine 2 gallon Salt Glazed Stoneware Preserve Jar with a cobalt slip decorated Bird.  It is 10 inches high and 8-1/2" in diameter at the bottom.  It is in very fine condition with only a tiny flake on the inside of the rim on the Albany Slip interior and a bit of wear on interior to the Albany Slip glaze which is to be expected due to age and usage.  I mention this merely for the sake of accuracy as it in no way detracts from the piece.

The Jar is a wonderful small size and the bird is very artfully done with the Cobalt decoration being quite heavy in places allowing for a light/dark contrast on the bird.  Our artist has even left some "dots" of the stoneware show through on the wing and on the flowers to give more dimension to the decoration.  Probably New York, c. 1860-80.
