Scrimshaw Coconut Dipper
Presented here, a fine Coconut Shell Scrimshaw Dipper with a wonderful carved wooden handle to simulate rope. The end of the handle has a carved "Turk's Head" Knot. The handle is attached to the coconut shell with a whale ivory fitting shaped like a heart and fastened with three brass tacks. Overall length is 14 inches. Wonderful detail and excellent condition.
Ex: Clifford W. Ashley, American artist and illustrator, author, sailor, and knot expert. Author of The Yankee Whaler and The Ashley Book of Knots who sailed on one of the last Whaling Vessels to leave New Bedford. In 1904, he observed a whaling voyage aboard the Bark Sunbeam, which he wrote about for Harper s Monthly Magazine and in his own book, The Yankee Whaler, which was profusely illustrated from his own personal experience. As a painter, he recorded scenes on the islands of Buzzards Bay, on Cape Cod, and along the New Bedford waterfront.
