Ivory Pie Crimper

Presented here, a fine 19th Century Ivory Pie Crimper (Jagging Wheel) in the stylized form of a Seahorse with a five-point star cutting wheel and two stylized hearts on the handle. The handle is shaped with two inward curving areas so it fits nicely into the hand. It is 4-3/4" long.

According to Ashley in The Yankee Whaler, the graphic tooth was the commonest bit of Scrimshaw and the busk the most sentimental but they provided no mechanical problems to tax Yankee ingenuity . . . "The fine fruit of Scrimshaw, the magnum opus of every scrimshanderer worth the name, the chef d'oeuvre by which he was willing that his reputation should stand or fall, was his jagging wheel." This was a gift most likely for his wife or intended and what more natural that the exiled Yankee should be "haunted with thoughts of this culinary triumph of the New England kitchen," . . . the pie, and the delicious smells that wafted through his memory overcoming the smell of the salty spray and reminded him of home.
