Silhouette of James Burnham

Presented here, a wonderful hollow-cut silhouette of Capt'n James Burnham of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  Captain Burnham was born April 15, 1788, the son of Amos Burnham and Sally Hierlihy, the 5th of 10 children born to the couple in Burlington, Vermont.

He married Olive Seeley of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin and they had four children between 1813 and 1819.  According to the information found on the silhouette, James Burnham was descended from Thomas Burnham who settled in Ipswich, Essex County, MA in 1635 and later moved to the Hartford, Ct. area.  Further information on the silhouette states that he died in 1820 at age 32 years.  This silhouette was most likely taken shortly before his death (judging from his dress) and is of the hollow-cut variety with cloth backing and watercolor and ink embellishments. It is in excellent condition, framed in a lemon gold frame with bubbly glass. Size is 3-1/2" x 2-1/2" (sight).
