Portrait of a Young Woman
William Mathew Prior (1806-1873)
Oil on Artist board

Presented here, a portrait of a very attractive young woman by William Mathew Prior.  She is identified on the reverse as "Grandmother Cheney on Father's side".  The paper also indicates that it was found in Sutton, New Hampshire where the Cheney's resided for many years.

Portraits by William Mathew Prior and other members of the Prior-Hamblin School are considered highly desirable by folk art collectors. While many are quite simplistic in conception and execution, this particular portrait is "over the top" in it's attention to detail in the clothing, the brooch and the flowers in the background as well as the presentation of the lovely young lady.

The work remains in fine original condition and is mounted within a period rosewood grain-painted frame.
