Presented here, a charming portrait of a red haired child in a white dress with blue floral decoration, holding roses.  She is painted seated in a landscape setting . . . The dark, forest-like background with a small stream and waterfall to the child's left is typical in child portraiture from central and western Massachusetts and the Hudson Valley area around Albany in the late 1830's - mid 1840's.

The sitter and the artist are both unidentified. Oil on panel, 23 x 28 inches (sight) and 31 x 36 inches in its great period ochre painted frame (with remnants of gilding that would have been applied later and then removed at some time). Extremely minor restoration (a few very small spots of in-paint in background). This picture is charming and pure in its presentation and aspect.
