Early 19th C. "Turkey Tail" Stencil Decorated Table Top Box

Wonderful Table Top Box in vibrant original paint, attributed to Moses Eaton (1798-1886), Dublin, NH.  Eaton was an American itinerant Folk Stencil Artist and his home, with many examples of his work, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. One finds examples of his stencils for sale today, copied from his stencil box which was found after his death in his daughter's attic and is now the property of SPNEA.
While he was primarily a wall decorator and worked alongside Rufus Porter on many projects, one being the Hancock Inn, as well as rooms in both NH and Maine, some of which are yet to be discovered under later wallpaper, object examples of his work, like this little box, are quite rare. Made of Cherry with mitre joint construction, original brass hinges fitted with offset slot screws, and overhung top. Early on fitted with backside hanging hole. Superb untouched original condition throughout. Great paint and design! This is stencil painting at it's best!  Truly the work of a master.
Size: 4 1/2"H X 10 7/8"W X 5"D.
