Small Ovoid Redware Jug - att: Pecker Pottery, Merrimack port, MA

Do not adjust your monitor!  That really is the color of this wonderful Redware Jug attributed to Pecker Pottery of Merrimack Port, Massachusetts. Olive Green fades into Peach and then varying degrees of light to darker brown.  It's the coloration and size that makes this piece so desirable.

On one side there is a bit of roughness in the "swath" on the glaze.  It's what Pecker Pottery is all about, but this was a near miss attempt in the making. It's like the shiny part of the glaze "skipped over".  Not a problem, at least not to me.  That's why there are front and back sides but even the back side displays wonderfully, it just has a different feel.  On the top of the neck of the jug there are a couple of spots of glaze loss where the redware body shows and there is one small area where the neck meets the handle that appears to have more of a bit of loss but what I consider to be insignificant on the whole when taking this entire piece into account.

It is totally glorious and only 6 inches tall!  It literally "sings" with exuberant color and shows the art of the potter at its very best.  The strength of New England Redware is in its glorious glazes. Unfortunately "things" happen over time and we need to be forgiving.  Overall this piece is in extremely fine condition and worthy of a stand up salute . . . after all folks, it's not Limoge China! Redware was fired at a fairly low temperature and thus rarely do we fine it without some sort of apology.
