Painted Leather Dome Top Box

Presented here is a drop dead gorgeous red painted leather covered Dome Top Box in the most wonderful Chinese Red paint with painted floral decoration. This one is real eye candy for the Folk Art collector.  The handle, lock and hasp are brass and the trunk is ornamented with brass-headed tacks. On the top of the box the tacks spell out 1775 in an oval cartouche.

The inside of the box is lined with newspaper from Providence, Rhode Island dated 1795 which makes for interesting reading.

The little trunk is in overall excellent condition.  The red paint has protected the leather and has kept from cracking and splitting and kept it intact on the box.  The painted floral decoration which covers the top, front and sides is composed of wonderful flowers that look like dogwood and wispy, trailing leaves.  The flowers are ivory colored and outlined in green.

Overall this is an outstanding example of a painted trunk the likes of which you would be hard pressed to find again.  While there is some minor wear to the paint as one would expect in a piece of this age it looks worse in the pictures than it does in person as the camera picks up tones not visible to the eye.  The dimensions are 14-1/2" long x 6" deep x 7: high to the top of the dome.
