 17th C. Iron Candlestand

Presented here a 17th century hand forged wrought iron standing lighting device.  It was made for either candle or wood splint light source. (Splints were narrow pieces of wood soaked in hot grease or pieces of pitch-laden wood.)  They would give a bright light of considerable duration for virtually no cost.  The splint was held against the spring when lit.  Made of unusually heavy gauge iron, it was meant to last and still has centuries more ahead of it. (Note how the heavy folded candle cup is made from and extension of the cross arm, also the tripod base artistry.  Lots of work, but most worthwhile results.  It stands 33" high and is in very fine condition.
