Portrait of a Woman
Attributed to William Mathew Prior

Circa 1840

Oil on Academy Board

Presented here is a fresh, classic Prior composition on pressboard within a paint decorated frame. A simple and direct image clearly conceived, confidently rendered, and attributed to William Mathew Prior, (1806 to 1873), Massachusetts and Maine. The work is sensitive and serene, sweet and agreeable . . . a woman of considerable appeal. The subject with full lips has eyes full of life . . . bright and wide; lovely skin-tone and brown hair.  She wears a white lace cap and fichu.

The artist dramatically posed his sitter against a black draped window with foliage below. This New England likeness remains in excellent original condition and is circa 1840. The painted frame measures 12.5 by 16.375 inches; view area measures: 9.5 by 13.375 inches.
