C. E. Spear, 1846, Probably English

Although not a fancy sampler by any means, it is nonetheless a desirable piece with a lot of charm. This is a folky sampler worked in silk on light colored linen and containing three alphabets and the signature name, C. E. Spear Born APR 19 1836 Worked in 1846.  Interesting to note is the fanciful third alphabet which is quite elaborate with great flourishes in the script.

The bottom portion of the piece contains two cottages nestled among some trees and surrounded by green lawn.  A great deal of the appeal of this sampler is in the warm tones in which it was worked. The red door and chimneys, as well as the green windows on the cottages really stand out! They present a cozy, inviting feeling and would most likely be a scene in the maker's view which they chose to present as the subject of their sampler. The house, found on the most elementary to the most sophisticated sampler is very popular with collectors . . . it is also the place where the sampler hung for friends to see the skill of the maker. The piece is worked entirely in cross-stitch and is a visual treat to the eye. It is the effort of a young child, just 10 years old. In excellent condition, it is conservation mounted into a custom faux grained frame with Tru Vue glass to protect and preserve.
