Early Wrought Iron Splint or Rushlight Holder

Detail of the Rushlight Holder. While function pretty much defined form, the blacksmith chose to embelish the holder with decorative elements that places this early lighting device into the category of folk art and shows off his not inconsiderable talent. A fine example of the art of the Blacksmith.

Presented here, a very fine, tall 18th Century Rushlight Holder on a arched tripod stand with large flat "penny" feet. The Rushlight Holder is adjustable along the length of the shaft and the weight of the arm would hold the lighted rush in place. The stand is 49-1/2" tall.

From the Mt. Wallingford Farm, Weare, NH. This family homestead, built in 1778 was occupied continuously by the family until 1996 when the sale of the home and downsizing caused the sale of many treasured family pieces. Recently another downsizing occurred as the remaining decendent moved again into smaller quarters and most of the remaining family treasures were sold.
