Anna Elizabeth Hoke, Montgomery Township, Franklin County,
Pennsylvania, c. 1825

It is always a bonus when we come across a sampler that has not only descended down through the family, but includes genealogical information on the maker.  Anna Elizabeth Hoke worked her sampler when she was a mere 6  years old (in the 7th year of her age) as she tells us on the sampler. We know from her family information that she was born in 1819 in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. We also note on the sampler that at some point in her life she removed the last two digits of the year so viewers of the piece would not know her age. Called a "vanity sampler", it was not uncommon for a woman who lived into adulthood to do this.

Anna was the daughter of Adam Hoke and Susanna Eichelberger and married Henry M. Eberly in 1839. The 1860 census shows them living in Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania with their 7 children and Henry s occupation is listed as a farmer. During the next 10 years, Anna passed away (1865) and Henry remarried.  Listed in the 1870 Census with his occupation as a Farmer and Dentist, residing with his new wife, and the children remaining still at home.

Anna worked this charming sampler in 1825, with a boldly designed two story, twin chimney, stone house. Two huge urns flank the house . . . A flight of fancy in our little 7-year-olds perception of the world around her. One Urn contains a Tulip Tree dripping with pendulous strawberries (?) and the other, a tree with the Quaker Star atop a multi-branched tree laden with fruit or flowers. On top of each of the trees sits a bird holding a flowering branch.  Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in very fine condition and measures 16-1/4" l. x 12"high.
