 Cast Iron Gypsy Kettle

Presented here, an excellent Cast Iron Cooking Pot or "Gypsy Kettle" as some call it.  This is a particularly fine example of a 18th Century cooking pot with a hand wrought iron bale handle.  These would have been used for cooking on the hearth or even carried by Continental Soldiers in the Revolutionary War. . . about every 6th Soldier having to carry one and, depending on that particular soldier's overall condition, many were discarded along the road after becoming heavier and heavier. Very few of these kettles survive today.

They were used for cooking everything from stews to boiling water. While at some point this one may have been used for a planter, the interior is still  in good condition with only some minor pitting from many years of use and some surface rust. It has no repairs and it's condition is excellent . It measures about 7" high x 7" in dia. and weighs about 5 pounds. You can read more about these rare American Cast Iron Pots in "Memoirs of a Revolutionary Soldier" by Joseph Plumb Martin.
